WE PROMOTE A COMMUNITY OF LIFE-LONG READERS

Rolling Readers Space Coast, Inc. is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit literacy organization committed to uniting Brevard County elementary-aged children with books and caring adults to promote a community of life-long readers. Since 1997, Rolling Readers programs have shared the joy of reading with Brevard County Title 1 elementary school children. Our volunteers work with children (both individually and in groups) to develop their desire to read, improve their reading skills, grow their imagination and make a lasting impact on their life.

WHY IS OUR MISSION SO IMPORTANT?

Reading is fundamental to functioning in our society. It is the foundation for educational, occupational and personal growth. By third grade, children with poor reading skills quickly begin to fall behind in school, with many never catching up. Their opportunities for a bright future begin to dim. We believe a community voice, that encourages and shares the joy of reading, has an impact on our youth.

  • Many states use third and fourth-grade reading levels to predict how many prison beds they may need in the future.

  • Children who are weak readers in third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school.

  • Across the nation, parents or caregivers read to just 47.8% of children (birth through age five) leaving more than half of our nation’s children at a disadvantage.

WE AIM TO IMPACT

Rolling Readers and its programs offers one intervention that aims to impact these statistics. In just 30 minutes to an hour each week, our volunteers share beloved stories and assist children in developing better reading skills. Whether working with a child individually or reading to a classroom of children, your support helps to strengthen their literacy skills, benefits their overall personal and educational growth, and leaves you fulfilled, knowing you helped a child.
